Sandra Meech: Images in a Landscape – Exploring photo transfer on fabric

Workshop description
For this workshop students will explore photographic transfer methods, particularly the one using an acrylic medium ‘Picture This’ by Plaid – the one used in my own textile work and also images created by heat transfer papers.
Working to a personal theme, any images can be chosen – landscapes from natural sources – sea, sky, distant horizons, trees and gardens, or the urban ‘cityscape’ with buildings and architecture, could be considered.
Design, composition and collage exercises in painted paper will provide a starting point and personal ‘words’, diary writings, transferred images and created surfaces become part of the final pieces. Some black and white heat transferred images will be provided and other techniques will be explored – painting with acrylic, and drawing on fabric before transfer dyeing colour onto it.
Stitching through this mix of media will be by machine but hand stitch could provide extra marks.
Level - All levels - free machine stitch skills essential.

Dawn Thorne: Looking Through the Layers – Exploring Transparency, Textile and Metal
Workshop description
For this workshop students will explore varying layers of
transparency, from barely translucent to crystal clear overlays. You will be working with paper, textile, nonwovens, metal, wax and oils to explore surface qualities which you will use in your compositions. You will look at design exercises to create your examples.
You will produce a range of samples that will become the starting point for further exploration which will incorporate the use of materials such as acetate film, perspex and resin. In combination these techniques create new and exciting surfaces and dimensions.
Hand and machine stitch is used to unite and combine the rhythms through the layers and give further surface embellishment.
The workshop will allow students to take inspiration from the samples worked on to develop into personal themes that will make up the resolved piece.
There will be discussion on presentation methods and applications for future work, including wall, freestanding and suspended pieces.
Level – for all levels, but good hand and machine skills essential.

My work is inspired by glass and steel structure, reflections and transparency convey
illusion which is seen by the viewer. I work with rhythms and parallax to create
wall hung and free-standing structures.
Dawn was presented to the The Queen in March 2007 after being commissioned to
